Abelhas Euglossini (Apidae) de áreas de Mata Atlântica: abundância, riqueza e aspectos biológicos Zoologia
Peruquetti,Rui Carlos; Campos,Lúcio Antonio de Oliveira; Coelho,Claudia Diniz Pinto; Abrantes,Célio Vicente Machado; Lisboa,Luciane Cristina de Oliveira.
Collection data of Euglossinae males from Parque Estadual do Rio Doce (PERD) and Viçosa, both areas with remnants of Atlantic Rain Forest (Mata Atlântica) in Minas Gerais state, Brazil are presented. Comparisons made among three fragments with different sizes and states of disturbance from Viçosa showed differences in abundance of most common species and apparently, Eulaema nigrita Lepeletir, 1841 can be an useful indicator of disturbed sites. Some populations of euglossine bees seems to be restrict to a forest fragment, there being few or no flow of individuals or species of one fragment to another, even when they are only 1 km apart. 15 species of euglossines were sampled in PERD, and the most abundant was Eulaema cingulata (Fabricius, 1804). At Viçosa,...

Alterações histológicas em placas ósseas do peixe cascudo Rineloricaria strigilata (Hensel) (Teleostei, Loricariidae) e sua freqüência no lago Guaíba, Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil Zoologia
Flores-Lopes,Fábio; Malabarba,Luiz R.; Pereira,Edson H.L.; Silva,José F. Pezzi da.
Little information is available about natural populations of fishes exposed to polluted waters in Brazil. Contaminants may be lethal or predispose fishes to sickness, being the analysis of aquatic organisms a good indicator of environmental quality. The violinha, Rineloricaria strigilata (Hensel, 1868), is a common loricariid catfish in the Guaíba lake basin, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, and has been selected as a bioindicator for being resident, occurring in more than 50% of the samples, and by showing externally detectable neoplasies. These are characterized by its dark pigmentation, bony plates hypertrophy, and hypertrophy and irregular arrangement of the odontodes. Histology showed hypertrophied epitelial tissues, with an increased number of secretory...

Tillandsia recurvata L. as a bioindicator of sulfur atmospheric pollution Ecología austral
Graciano,Corina; Fernández,L V; Caldiz,D O.
Tillandsia recurvata L. is an epiphyte that absorbs nutrients from the air, so it could be used as a bioindicator of atmospheric sulfur pollution. In order to test this idea, Tillandsia recurvata samples were seasonally collected for two years at three sites of La Plata, Buenos Aires Province, Argentina, in a suburban park and in a rural area 60 km away from the city. Macro- and microscopic observations were carried out and chlorophyll and sulfur concentrations of the tissue were measured to evaluate if this epiphyte shows morphological or physiological damage in the most polluted sites or if it accumulates sulfur in the tissues when sulfur in the air increases. No micro- or macroscopic damage was observed, and chlorophyll content seemed not to be related...

Le mercure, le cadmium et le plomb dans les eaux littorales libanaises: apports et suivi au moyen de bioindicateurs quantitatifs (éponges, bivalves et gastéropodes) ArchiMer
Nakhle, Khaled.
In 1975, the meeting for the protection of the Mediterranean Sea in Barcelona fixed several important objectives. One of them was the creation of National Observation Programs in order to evaluate the levels and tendencies of pollutants. Furthermore the MED-POL program has re-evaluated and developed these objectives. Lebanon has signed the Barcelona Convention and has been engaged in providing data about its coastal water quality. Unfortunately the Lebanese war, which also began in 1975, paralyzed the country for 15 years. Since 1990, successive governments in the country have fixed as an objective the reconstruction of the tourism sector. As a consequence, they became interested in the environmental problems. The studies carried out before or during the...

Modeling trace metal accumulation in the mediterranean mussel, mytilus galloprovincialis ArchiMer
Casas, Stellio; Cossa, Daniel; Gonzalez, Jean-louis; Bacher, Cedric; Andral, Bruno.
Monitoring coastal contamination by trace metals pollution using mollusks bivalves as quantitative bioindicators is widely performed in many international biomonitoring programs. In this purpose, modeling metal dynamic in marine mussels is a reliable tool. It allows understanding the bioaccumulation process which results from the interactions between biological, chemical and environmental factors. To calibrate such a model, kinetic experiments on uptake and elimination were conducted on three Mediterranean sites chosen on the basis of their different nutritive and chemical characteristics.

In situ kinetics of mercury bioaccumulation in mytilus galloprovincialis estimated by transplantation experiments ArchiMer
Casas, Stellio; Cossa, Daniel; Gonzalez, Jean-louis; Bacher, Cedric; Andral, Bruno.
Monitoring coastal contamination by trace metals pollution using mollusks bivalves as quantitative bioindicators is widely performed in many international biomonitoring programs. For this purpose, studying mercury dynamic in marine mussels is a reliable tool. In situ experiments on uptake and elimination kinetics were conducted in three Mediterranean sites, chosen on the basis of their contamination levels. Mussels were transplanted from a clean area to a highly contaminated one and then transferred back to a clean site. This approach makes it possible to define bioaccumulation factors and uptake and elimination rates consistently with the real environmental conditions.

Modélisation de la bioaccumulation de métaux traces (Hg, Cd, Pb, Cu et Zn) chez la moule, Mytilus galloprovincialis, en milieu méditerranéen ArchiMer
Casas, Stellio.
Monitoring coastal contamination of trace metals using bivalve molluscs as quantitative bioindicators is widely used in many international monitoring programs. The bioaccumulation of metal within an organism results from the interaction between physiological (growth, loss of weight, absorption, accumulation), chemical (metal concentration, speciation, bioavailability) and environmental factors (temperature, SPM, chlorophyll). By utilizing the parameters above in this study, it appears that modeling metal dynamics in marine mussels is a reliable tool. The model allows understanding the bioaccumulation process which results from the interactions between biological, chemical and environmental factors. One of the objective of this study was to couple a...

Brachidontes variabilis and Patella sp as quantitative biological indicators for cadmium, lead and mercury in the Lebanese coastal waters ArchiMer
Nakhle, Khaled; Cossa, Daniel; Khalaf, Ghaby; Beliaeff, Benoit.
The mussel, Brachidontes variabilis, and the limpet, Patella sp., were used as indicators to monitor cadmium, lead and mercury concentrations along the Lebanese coast. Studies were carried out in order to define the best strategy for assessing and minimizing the effects of size and physiological condition on the metal contents of the molluscs, and corrective models were constructed. Metal concentrations in surface water were measured to estimate bioconcentration factors (BCFs). The BCFs varied from 8.3 x 10(3) to 3.4 x 10(4), from 7.5 x 10(3) to 8.0 X 10(3) and from 3.0 x 10(4) to 3.2 x 10(4), for Cd, Pb and Hg, respectively. For limpets, BCFs varied from 1.7 x 10(4) to 7.4 x 10(4) for Cd, from 2.5 x 10(3) to 6 x 103 for Pb and remained fairly constant at...

Edge effects on the orchid-bee fauna (Hymenoptera: Apidae) at a large remnant of Atlantic Rain Forest in southeastern Brazil Neotropical Entomology
Nemésio,André; Silveira,Fernando A..
Male orchid bees were sampled with chemical baits monthly from July 1999 to April 2000 at six sites situated at different distances from the forest edge (0 to 4,000 m) at Parque Estadual do Rio Doce, the largest remnant of Atlantic Forest in the state of Minas Gerais, southeastern Brazil. The main goal of this study was to assess the abundance, richness, and the community structure of the orchid-bee fauna at different distances from the edge. In all, 1,183 males from 20 species were collected. Only minor and insignificant variation in richness and abundance were observed among the sites. Two dominant species, Euglossa analis Westwood (Hymenoptera: Apidae) and Eulaema cingulata (Fabricius) (Hymenoptera: Apidae), showed strongly opposing habitat...

Cricket singing means rain: semiotic meaning of insects in the district of Pedra Branca, Bahia State, northeastern Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
Costa Neto,Eraldo M..
This paper deals with the semiotic meanings which are given both to the appearance and/or behavior of insect species according to the ethnoentomological knowledge of the inhabitants of the village of Pedra Branca, Bahia State, Brazil. Data were collected from February to May 2001 by performing open-ended, recorded interviews with nine men and twenty-five women, whose ages ranged from 19 to 82 years old. Data were analyzed by using the union model, which involves considering all available information on the surveyed subject. Twelve kinds of insects were associated with both beneficial and harmful events, as well as with the indication of changing weather. The way local people perceive and interpret the appearance and/or behavior of certain species of...

Thermocyclops decipiens (Kiefer, 1929) (Copepoda, Cyclopoida) as indicator of water quality in the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil BABT
Landa,Giovanni Guimarães; Barbosa,Francisco Antonio Rodrigues; Rietzler,Arnola Cecilia; Maia-Barbosa,Paulina Maria.
The aim of this work was to study the possible utilization of Thermocyclops decipiens as indicator of the trophic degree and water quality of some watersheds of the state of Minas Gerais. From the beginning of the decade of 90, T. decipiens was recorded in several water collections of the state, including the basins of the rivers Paranaíba, São Francisco, Doce and Grande, within environments mainly of meso and eutrophics characteristics. Of the 28 places of occurrence of the species and according to the water quality index (WQI) used by Environmental Foundation of Minas Gerais (FEAM), 7 of these environments presented WQI good, 16 medium, 4 bad and one very bad. This classification corroborated the hypothesis that T. decipiens could be used as indicator...

Application of rapid bioassessment protocols (RBP) for benthic macroinvertebrates in Brazil: comparison between sampling techniques and mesh sizes Neotropical Entomology
Buss,Daniel F.; Borges,Erika L..
This study is part of the effort to test and to establish Rapid Bioassessment Protocols (RBP) using benthic macroinvertebrates as indicators of the water quality of wadeable streams in south-east Brazil. We compared the cost-effectiveness of sampling devices frequently used in RBPs, Surber and Kick-net samplers, and of three mesh sizes (125, 250 and 500 µm). A total of 126,815 benthic macroinvertebrates were collected, representing 57 families. Samples collected with Kick method had significantly higher richness and BMWP scores in relation to Surber, but no significant increase in the effort, measured by the necessary time to process samples. No significant differences were found between samplers considering the cost/effectiveness ratio. Considering mesh...

Chironomidae assemblage structure in relation to organic enrichment of an aquatic environment Neotropical Entomology
Simião-Ferreira,Juliana; DeMarco Jr,Paulo; Mazão,Gustavo R; Carvalho,Adriana R.
In this study we determined the taxonomic diversity of larval Chironomidae upstream and downstream to discharges of the sewage treatment plant (STP) from Agro-industrial District of Anápolis, State of Goiás, Brazil. Additionally, we evaluated the use of the lognormal distribution as a measure of biotic integrity of this system. The Chironomidae communities were sampled in three sites, upstream and downstream of the discharge of the sewage treatment plant (STP). We fitted the truncate lognormal distribution based on a nonlinear regression of the datasets using least squares as loss function in an iterative quasi-Newton procedure. The total of 21,498 individuals were sampled, from 24 Chironomidae genera, Chironomus, Polypedilum, Rheotanytarsus e...

Methodological adaptation for nematodes extration in forest soils of the southern Mata Atlântica PAB
Moser,Thomas; Frankenbach,Silja.
The objective of this work was to clarify whether the method to extract nematodes from European soils is suitable for forest soils and litter in the eastern of Paraná state, Brazil, and whether nematode abundance differs between sites with different ecosystems and levels of human interference. The study sites were situated in the coastal area of the Serra do Mar, near the town of Antonina, in Eastern Paraná, Brazil. Cobb's sieving and decanting method was more appropriate than ISO method, since extraction efficiency was higher and intra-sample variability was significantly lower. In order to achieve an extraction efficiency higher than 90%, Cobb's method was modified. For the extraction of nematodes from litter, the Baermann funnel, with an extraction time...

A fenntarthatóság mérése az erdőgazdaságban AgEcon
Somogyi, Zoltan.

The effects of four types of anthropogenic disturbances on composition and abundance of terrestrial isopods (Isopoda: Oniscidea) Rev. Bras. Zool.
Magrini,Mariana J; Freitas,André V. L; Uehara-Prado,Marcio.
The Brazilian Atlantic Forest is currently reduced to about 12% of its original range. Among the components that make up its great diversity, there are species with the potential to be bioindicators, which can be very important for conservation-oriented studies. This study compares the species composition, abundance and sex ratio of terrestrial isopods in sites that show different anthropogenic disturbance histories and are located within four reserves in the Atlantic Forest of southwestern Brazil. Our study explores these crustaceans as indicators of anthropogenic disturbance. The influence of one of the following factors was explored in each protected area: 1) history of vegetation harvesting, 2) trail management, 3) Eucalyptus planting, and 4) edge...

Structural changes in Psidium guajava 'Paluma' leaves exposed to tropospheric ozone Acta Botanica
Tresmondi,Fernanda; Alves,Edenise Segala.
Psidium guajava 'Paluma' has being tested as an ozone (O3) bioindicator and responds with pigmentation between the veins on the adaxial surface, due to the accumulation of phenolic compounds. These compounds act as non-enzymatic antioxidants that neutralize reactive oxygen species (ROS), formed from O3. This study aimed to evaluate the leaf structure of plants with and without visible symptoms and to establish these symptoms at the cellular level. Beside this we also aimed to detect structural changes that can minimize the effects of the O3 on the plant. The accumulation of phenolic substances, stomatal density and structural changes in P. guajava 'Paluma' leaf tissues exposed during the four seasons of the year were evaluated. The study was conducted at...

Structure of Drosophilidae Assemblage (Insecta, Diptera) in Pampa Biome (São Luiz Gonzaga, RS) Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Poppe,Jean Lucas; Valente,Vera Lúcia da Silva; Schmitz,Hermes José.
The Brazilian Pampa (the southernmost end of the country) is currently a highly modified environment because of increasing agricultural activities. In many places, only small parts of grasslands remain inside an agricultural landscape. Drosophilidae (Diptera) have been widely used as a potential bioindicators to monitor the effects of anthropogenic changes in natural environments. However, the fauna of Drosophilidae in the Pampa Biome from natural and disturbed environments, still remains largely unknown. The present study represents one of the first attempts to fill this gap, showing results from monthly collections in the municipality of São Luiz Gonzaga (28º24'28"S, 54º57'39"W), in the Brazilian Pampa. A species inventory was carried out in two...
